Experts Offer Their Top 7 Must-Have Makeup Advice for Dark Skin Tone

Updated: Oct 2

While knowing exactly which makeup is best for your skin tone can be challenging, it's also the easiest way to dramatically boost your game when it comes to appearance. Using skin tone-appropriate eyeshadow, liquid foundation, bronzers, and lipstick will provide a cohesive element to your appearance and enhance the natural beauty of your complexion.

We've compiled a list of the top 7 makeup techniques for people with deep complexions below if you need some inspiration on how to skillfully apply makeup to complement darker skin tones.

1. Embrace color.

Bright, bold, and lovely colors look amazing on people with deep and dark complexion tones. Try some of the alternatives, even if they might appear very bright in the pan, tube, etc. The way these hues complement and contrast with your skin tone can surprise you. Makeup artist Ellen Bodkins, who is located in New York City, advises spending some time seeking advice from professionals if you're having problems deciding which ones work best for you. In Senit Beauty, we are helping you find your color match

“If you are at a loss when finding your go-to shades it's always great to defer to an artist. Access their knowledge by stopping at a makeup counter and asking an artist for opinions about optimal colors,” she says. “Try the colors right then and there and you will be able to see what looks great on you and go from there. You can also do a YouTube search for makeup artists and influencers that look like you. They always have super helpful lists, and it's free.”

2. Warm up your blush shade.

According to Bodkins, "dark skin tones can appear ashy when bright pink or peach blush tones are used." Rather, go for richer, more pigmented blush shades such as warm magenta, berry tones with purple undertones, or golden pinks and reds. The undertone (warm, cool, or neutral) of your complexion can also determine which blush shade suits you the best. Uncertain about the tone you're using? Utilize this guide to learn more.

Try a cheek stain or highly pigmented cream blush instead of a powder blush if you can't seem to attain the desired effect. These will have a stronger color payoff in addition to being more moisturizing. Just so you know: cream blush works well for dry skin types, but oily skin types might want to stick with a powder product.

3. Don’t shy away from a bold lip.

Deep plums, reds, and wines look amazing on those with dark complexion tones, according to Bodkins. "Nudes, mauves, and apricot hues also look fantastic." We adore the SEINT beauty lip collection that works well for both day and night.

It really depends on your skin type and preferences whether you go for a glossy, matte, or natural look!

4. Go golden when highlighting.

Use highlighters with gold, rose gold, or bronze tones to draw attention to dark skin tones. When applied to dark complexions, frosty, silvery, pink-hued highlighters tend to darken the complexion—exactly the opposite effect you want!

In the event that you are unable to locate the ideal shade, feel free to combine several highlighting tones to create a unique combination. Consider combining some highlighters, such as those from SEINT Beauty.

If you prefer creamy highlighting sticks over powder solutions because you have dry skin, use one to enhance your radiance. With us, you may still design your own unique combination.

5. Test foundation shades on your jawline.

Don't only swipe a small amount of foundation on your cheek to check if it fits while choosing the ideal hue. Rather, to ensure that you receive the best shade, Bodkins advises balancing the tone of your face, neck, and chest area. Avoid using your hands to test foundations, as they are typically darker than our faces. Placing the foundation swatch on your jawline is always the finest option.

Smear a vertical line from the bottom of the cheek to slightly below the jawline in order to accurately test liquid foundation on the jawline. A good foundation should be able to blend in with the skin without any effort at all.

6. Consider your undertones when choosing eyeshadow.

Bold colors look amazing on dark skin tones, so don't pass up the chance to wear bright eye makeup. Regardless of your skin tone—fair, medium, or dark—you should always consider the undertone of your skin when applying eyeshadow.

Warmer hues work best with warm undertones, while cooler tints work best with cold undertones. You're lucky if your undertones are neutral! You can enjoy yourself with almost anything!

The SEINT Beauty eyeshadow collection is a great option for people with warm undertones and dark skin tones because it includes a variety of smokey neutral shades that look great worn alone or combined.

Try using an eyeshadow primer or concealer first if you find that your powder shadows aren't showing up on your skin as brightly as you'd like. As an alternative, consider utilizing cream or liquid eyeshadow, which frequently have a large color payoff and are highly pigmented.

7. Don’t skimp on SPF.

SPF should always be the first step in your daily skincare and/or cosmetics process. Even though dark skin tones might not burn as quickly as fair skin tones, regular protection from UV radiation and early symptoms of aging is still necessary.
