Why? A neighbor dug an even deeper well nearby, cutting off their supply. This moment opened Thomas' eyes to a larger problem—how industrialized nations' massive consumption often drains precious water resources from developing countries.
Rather than contributing to the problem, OLIVE TREE PEOPLE has taken a stand for sustainability. Even though their agricultural methods are sustainable, Thomas wanted to go further and help solve the water crisis affecting communities in Africa. That’s when the “OLIVEDA for Africa” initiative was born in August 2013.
Why Wells in Africa?
In Senegal, water scarcity is a serious issue. The “OLIVEDA for Africa” project aims to bring clean water to villages that desperately need it. For every 100 hectares of mountain olive tree land that OLIVEDA acquires, they build a well in Africa. These wells provide life-changing water access to villagers who would otherwise struggle to obtain clean drinking water.
In the Senegalese villages of Mhaba and Pellew, OLIVEDA has already dug wells reaching up to 80 meters deep. Thanks to this initiative, around 15,000 residents in various villages now have access to clean water.
